Smart & Final is a chain of retail grocery and food service stores offering deeply discounted products in a food warehouse format. The company is headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Its idea originated in 1871 when Herman Hellman, Jacob Haas, and Bernard Cohn saw an opportunity for a retail store selling food and home staples in Los Angeles, a then small ranching town. They founded the Hellman-Hass Grocery Co. Afterwards, J.S. “Jim” Smart and H.D. “Hildane” Final founded Smart & Final in Long Beach, California in 1919 and pioneered the concept of the “cash-and-carry” grocery store. In 1953 the two companies merged creating the Smart & Final we know today. Smart & Final offers smaller stores and quality everyday staples and groceries. It has locations throughout California, Arizona, and Nevada. It is known as the “smaller, faster grocery warehouse store.” There are also larger Smart & Final stores, Smart & Final Extra!, and Smart & Final also caters to the business foodservice industry through their Smart Foodservice Warehouse Stores.
