Where to find stores

Target

The history of Target dates back to the turn of the 20th century, when a Presbyterian church in downtown Minneapolis burned down, during the Panic of 1893, and the congregation asked parishioner George Dayton to help it rebuild by purchasing the empty lot next to it. Dayton purchased the lot, and built a six-story dry goods store named Dayton Company, which adhered to strict Presbyterian guidelines and donated 5% of its income to charity. In 1962 Dayton Company developed an upscale discount retail concept where shoppers could “Expect More. Pay Less.” The first Target discount store opened in Roseville, Minnesota, and by the 1980s Target stores stretched from coast to coast. Growth continued as massive SuperTarget stores with full groceries were launched in the 1990s. Today Target has 1,853 stores in all 50 states of the United States, including various locations in Miami, Orlando, and McAllen, Texas, as well as CityTarget and TargetExpress stores in major cities. Target also has customer-service and logistics headquarters in India.
