About Market Basket

Founded in Lowell, Massachusetts back in 1917 and headquartered in nearby Tewksbury, MA, Market Basket was originally a small market that catered to local residents who had immigrated from Canada, Greece, or elsewhere. Today, it is now a major supermarket chain in the Northeast region of the United States.

At present, there are 79 Market Basket stores across New England—specifically Massachusetts (49), New Hampshire (29), and Maine (1). Additionally, there are also about 34 Market Basket stores located throughout Texas and Louisiana (such as in Lake Charles and Leesville), but these belong to a separate company. (Please go to to view this company’s website and check out all the ways in which you can save at its stores.)

One aspect of Market Basket that makes the grocery store chain unique is, without a doubt, the unmatched loyalty it has inspired in both its employees and its customers—many of whom put their loyalty towards the retailer on full display through peaceful protesting back in 2014 in an effort to save the company.

Why People Like to Shop at Market Basket

  • Affordable Prices: The New England Market Basket is widely known for its low prices and weekly ads/weekly sales, with its slogan being: “More for Your Dollar.” Meanwhile, the Texas & Louisiana-based Market Basket offers customers rewards through its Market Basket Rewards loyalty program, which is free to join and provides the customer with a card that accumulates points with each purchase.
  • Wide Selection: Market Basket sells a variety of different products, ranging from standard groceries (like bread, cereal, pasta, pet food, beauty supplies, health & wellness products, etc.), to produce, to dairy & frozen foods, to meat, to delicatessen, to seafood, to cheese, to bakery items, to fresh rotisserie chicken and hand-spun pizza, to sushi, to coffee, to alcohol (in New Hampshire and Maine—not in Mass), and everything in between.
  • Dedication to Customer Service: Store employees always go the extra mile to assist the customer, showing a genuine interest in helping them find what they need. If a customer has trouble finding an item, a store associate will happily walk with them and show them to the item, rather than just tell them where to find it. This is customer service at its best.
