Originally founded in Detroit, Michigan back in 1899 as S. S. Kresge Corporation (named after its founder, S. S. Kresge), today Kmart is a nationwide discount retail chain in the United States. The first “Kmart” store opened in 1962, with the retailer soon finding great success and expanding to a grand total of over 2,300 stores by 1994. However, the company has had to close the vast majority of these stores over the past 20 or so years due to financial troubles, with only a fraction of these 2,323 stores remaining as of today.

At the moment, Kmart has around 200 locations remaining, following numerous store closings in recent years. Locations still exist throughout the USA in 37 different states, as well as in Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Two specific remaining Kmart locations include its stores in Miami, FL and McAllen, TX.
