YOUNKERS

Younkers is an American online department store which was previously a brick-and-mortar store, but closed all stores in August 2018. It was founded as a dry-goods business in 1856 in Keokuk, Iowa, by three Polish Jewish immigrants, the brothers Lipman, Samuel, and Marcus Younker. Younkers  grew and expanded throughout Iowa, and even installed Iowa’s first escalator at its headquarters in downtown Des Moines. In the 1940s and 50s, Younkers continued to expand throughout Iowa, and in 1955 it opened its first mall store in Omaha, Nebraska. By the late 1970s, there were 28 Younkers stores in five states. Youngers suffered a terrible setback with two separate fires that affected two stores in Des Moines, one of them resulting in 11 deaths. Today, Younkers has been acquired by The Bon-Ton and is not only expanding its online presence, but also beginning to open some stores that had been closed down since 2018.

HOURS AND LOCATIONS

Currently, there are presently no Younkers store locations, but the first store re-opening is coming up soon in Illinois. Past locations such as Duluth, Omaha, Waterloo, and Wausau (among others) will re-open as needed.
