Allergy-friendly
food tips
Keep your picnic picks simple. One
of the beautiful things about picnics
is how relaxed and casual they tend to
be. Let your menu reflect that
tone—plus, the fewer ingredients you
include, the less likely allergens will be
present in your meal.
Substitute allergy-friendly options
for outdoor dining favorites. Use
legume-based pastas for pasta
salads, mix in a light vinaigrette in
place of mayo in potato salad and
serve guacamole or salsa in place of
dairy-based dips.
Make your own marinades and
spice rubs before firing up the grill.
Many sauces and condiments, such
as barbecue sauce, may contain
unexpected allergens including
peanuts, tree nuts, wheat and
even fish.
• Create an impressive board. The display itself is just as
important as the tasty foods you put on it. Aim for a
variety of colors, textures and flavors.
• Use vegetables for a pop of color. They’re great
allergy-friendly vehicles for dips! Sturdy vegetables, such
as carrots, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes and broccoli,
work best.
• Use a combination of sweet and savory options. Add flavor
and fill in open spaces on the board with clusters of
grapes, berries or cut melon, and then sprinkle in a few
Taste of Inspirations® olives across the plate.
• Add texture. Include small bowls of pumpkin and sunflower
seeds, crunchy chickpeas or corn tortilla chips for a
satisfying crunch.
