Sears

Sears Roebuck and Company, better known as Sears, is the oldest department store chain in the USA. It was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1893 by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck. The Sears Roebuck and Company began as a mail-order catalogue, offering quality products to residents of rural areas throughout the United States who did not have access to the same products and services city dwellers enjoyed. In the 1930s, Sears began its first retail department stores, and greatly expanded throughout the US and internationally between the 1950s and 70s. When it was built in Chicago in 1974, The Sears Tower (or Willis Tower) was the tallest building in the world, and continued to be the tallest building in the United States until New York’s One WTC was built in 2013. Sears has been in the news recently due to financial difficulties, and it has resulted in the closing of many of its stores, after greatly-discounted closing liquidation sales. Many of Sears’s difficulties began when the company purchased the failing K-Mart discount department stores, many of which have closed since the acquisition. Today’s Sears stores are more up-to-date with customers’ styles and preferences, while continuing to offer reliable, quality name-brand products for which Sears has always been recognized.
