17 CHOOSING THE STRING TRIMMER THAT MEETS YOUR NEEDS. Three Types of Power 2-cycle engine. The standard for years, these are less expensive and very efficient, with plenty of power to do the job. However, they require mixing oil and gas. 4-cycle engine. More power and torque at lower RPMS, these are more fuel efficient with fewer emissions, quieter and do not require mixing oil and gas. Electric / Battery. Environmentally friendly, these are powered by either a plug-in cord or a rechargeable battery. They are quieter and lighter weight, but often less powerful. FIVE EASY WAYS TO MAINTAIN YOUR TRIMMER Two Types of Shafts Straight shafts are made for better weight balance and are used by more pros due to their longer reach and cutting head options. These work best for trimming under branches, porches and hedges. Keep a spare, pre-wound spool on hand for quick replacement. Curved shafts are generally lightweight, well-balanced and economically priced. Two Types of Cutting Heads Always use the specific line size for your trimmer. Heavier line will stress the motor and gearbox if they weren't designed to handle it. Bump head. You simply tap the head to advance the line, then refill and rewind the line as needed. Fresh line works best. Old line can crack and break Auto-feed. Line automatically advances, then refill the line as needed. too easily in the middle of a job. Fixed line. For easy line changes, simply advance the line and reload in seconds, with nothing to take apart or wind. Keep the trimmer head clean and free of loose objects.
