s February arrives, our thoughts turn
to our hearts (it’s American Heart
Month) and to love (Valentine’s Day).
The two, of course, are related. But
how will February play out in 2021?
Turning to the ancient Greeks might offer
some modern ideas. The Greeks believed there
were seven types of love. Here’s a highly simplified
look at them:
Eros is passionate love, the kind inflicted by
Cupid’s arrow.
Philia conveys friendship (translation today:
your BFFs).
Storge is a natural fondness stemming from
familiarity or dependency, as within a family.
Agape is selfless love expressed through charity or altruism.
Ludus is teasing, playful love, as in flirting.
Pragma, as it suggests, is a pragmatic love
based on common goals.
Philautia is self-love. A modest amount is
healthy; too much is not so good.
The point is that love is more than just the
romantic version. And that’s more relevant this
particular February than ever before. Simple acts
of love can go a long way in helping those who are
weary and weathered from the struggles of this
past year. I can’t think of anybody who isn’t.
So, perhaps roses, jewelry or wine for
romantic partners; chocolates for work partners
and BFFs; a box of candy conversation hearts
if you’re courting somebody; and a kind donation
to a charity addressing today’s challenges. You’ll
find ideas for several of these in the pages of this
month’s issue.
And for yourself? A pat on the back for offering gifts from the heart.
